Tube amp how long standby

Won't hurt the amp to leave it on stand by for any length of time. But I think tubes would tend to last longer if they aren't heat cycled turned completely off for short breaks. Shiny McShine Member. Messages 9, Since the you're making sure the electron cloud is fully formed before powering back on. As I understand it, there's minimal material coming off the plates when they are fully warmed up.

Hence, allow at least a minute from cold startup before taking it out of standby. Extended standby only costs electricity. My audiophile friends like to warm their amps up for several hours before listening as an aside. There is no provable difference in tube life with regard to use of a standby.

There is a slight danger to an amp from leaving an amp on standby for too long, but that depends on the actual amp design and how the standby is wired up. Messages 10, My uneducated opinion- use standby when turning the amp on What about the possibility of cathode stripping, or was it poisoning, from extended standby periods?

Thanks guys that's been really useful! Stu Blue Member. Never heard of cathode poisoning but cathode stripping can only occur in equipment that uses very high plate voltage such as in a radio transmitter. Cathode stripping is caused by applying plate voltage before the cathode reaches operating temperature. There's even a timer circuit built into such high voltage devices so the plate voltage can't be applied until the cathode reaches operating temperature.

Some tube powered PA systems were turned on when they were installed in office buildings and never turned off for decades, and the original tubes still worked fine, particularly the preamp tubes. Heaters don't last forever, just like light bulbs. That said, I wouldn't leave either on overnight.

Filaments and light bulbs are different, and doing different things. Filaments are meant to heat up a piece of metal the cathode to a specific temperature so it emits the correct amount of atoms. Light bulbs are meant to be heater to the point of emitting light, which is much hotter than filaments. Light bulbs have a huge failure danger when heated and bumped. November 05, Read More. In fact, they have to be really hot—like, glowing hot—before you can put a strong amount of electricity through them, and it naturally takes a brief period for them to reach their proper operating temperatures.

If you turn a tube amp on and immediately crank it to full volume before the tubes have had a chance to warm up, you risk damaging your amp. Therein lies the real utility of the standby switch. At a rehearsal or gig, in fact, a good modus operandi is to first turn on your amp in standby mode, then go about setting up the rest of your gear—adjust pedals, run cords, tune up, order a drink, wash your hands and so forth.
