The Mafia's sole purpose is to murder the productive citizens in their bed. They have free reign of the town at night, but by day they appear to be normal citizens. As a response to these terrible events, the townspeople have hired an Inspector , whose job is to remain disguised while attempting to root our the members of the Mafia.
The game of Mafia is played by an odd number of people. Good numbers are 9, 11, or If playing with advanced cards, then certain characters will have their own individual end game. These characters will be, in essence, a third faction, working to their own goal. Ideally, Mafia should have 7 players and a moderator.
However, You can alter the game to accommodate more or fewer players. But to get the most out of this game, try to have at least 5 players.
Take 5 Citizen cards and 2 Mafia cards, shuffle the cards and give one to each player. Make sure each card is placed face down. Each player should then take a look at their card.
Remember, Mafia is a deduction game, which means players should try to maintain a poker face at all times. Once each player has looked at their card, the moderator will begin the night cycle. Once the moderator announces night, each player should close their eyes and put their heads down. Then the moderator will tell the Mafia players to wake up. The Mafia players will then be able to see each other. Using gestures alone, the Mafia players should point to the citizens they want to kill.
Once done, they should signal their decision to the Moderator. The Moderator will then announce the end of the night cycle. The Moderator opens the day cycle by announcing which Citizen was killed by the Mafia. Once every player has opened their eyes, they can begin to debate what has happened. Any accusation will need to be backed by at least one other player.
The Moderator should then announce a vote. A show of hands does this. If the player is found guilty then they leave the game. If they are found not guilty, then the debate continues again. Under traditional Mafia rules, one player should leave each day. Once a character is eliminated they show their card to the remaining players. Look people directly in the eye and ask them if they are in the mafia. Once a nomination to kill is made, someone must second it for the player to be seriously considered in the mafia.
If you have two solid nominations, all players then vote to kill, majority wins. You can have as many nominations as you want, but you need a majority to kill. When a player is killed, they are no longer allowed to speak and their identity is not revealed.
Second Night : All players' eyes are closed and the narrator awakens the mafia and asks who they want to kill. She then awakens the doctor for the first time and asks who they want to save. And then, she awakens the detective and asks who they want to know about.
Third Day : The narrator awakens all players and someone has been killed, unless the doctor has figured out who the mafia had their sights on and saved this player.
The game continues in these phases, day and night, day and night, until civilians kill all mafia members or mafia outnumber civilians. Once you are killed from the game, you are then allowed to see the identities of all players at night.
You will be shocked to see who has been fooling you and will bond will the other players who have been killed. It is almost just as thrilling to watch the game take place—knowing all the identities—as it is to be alive playing. You will talk about it on your walk home and perhaps the next day. That epic game of Mafia you played where you tricked your closest friends and family into thinking you were on their side and then betrayed them for the win.
